Kacie
“Let’s wait till we see Viktor,” I murmur. My hands burn against the wolf’s bane but I can’t let go and I don’t cry out. I don’t deserve relief. I deserve to feel this. My people have experienced worse while I lay in bed sleeping peacefully.
I can feel their eyes on my back as we walk through the territory. It doesn’t take long before we see two figures. Viktor standing in front of Diana.
Diana?
Why would Diana be here?
“Ath?” I called to her in hopes she would be able to make sense of this.
“I don’t understand what’s going on either,” Athena murmurs.
“Alpha,” the men who dragged me here responded in unison.
Alpha?
This whole situation is getting weirder. How could she have taken her father’s place? It’s not unheard of to have a female Luna but it isn’t the norm. It hasn’t happened in years. Packs don’t widely accept a female as their male unless she fights for her place.
I looked at Diana and Viktor turns to face me. Fear and worry stretched across his features. With his back to Diana, she kicks the back of his knees and he falls to his knees.
“What is going on Diana? Why are you here? Why are you doing this? What have I done to warrant you storming onto my pack in the middle of the night?” I yelled, trying to get her attention away from Viktor. I was kicked forward and fell to my knees.
She walked around Viktor and gripped his hair back before she raised her head to look at me. I lifted my head to look into her eyes and gasped at what I saw there. No longer did her eyes burn with passion, no longer could I feel her kindness radiating off of her. Instead, I saw a darkness in them that wouldn’t be appeased with just our deaths.
“What do you want?” I pleaded.
“Revenge,” she breathed.
“Revenge? For what? What have I done?” I asked.
“You don’t know what you’ve done to me?” She asked, her eyebrows jumping up in surprise, her eyes widening with insanity.
“I’m sorry about your dad, Diana. I had no choice,” my voice choked. “I know he was your dad and he was all you had but he deserved his death. I didn’t kill him but I didn’t help him either.”
Her shoulders drop an inch.
“Does sorry fix everything?” She asked more to herself.
“Then what?! Diana, what could warrant this? What have I done?” I screamed at her.
“This isn’t just about my dad,” she said loudly.
I watch in horror as she crouches down behind Viktor and holds my gaze.
“Do you know how easy it would be?” She asked. “I have your full attention and I’m wondering about all the ways I could kill him. What would make you hurt the most?”
“Please,” I beg.
I watch, all I can do is watch as she slides her finger down Viktor’s neck. Her finger slides lower and stops in front of his heart. She cocks her head and looks at me with the same insanity I’ve only seen in Ken’s eyes.
“Please,” I beg again. “Please? No? You want me to think about you? You want me to listen to your request? Why? You didn’t even give me the option? You didn’t give me the chance? You didn’t ask me before you took everything from me!!”
“Diana,” I cry.
I gritted my teeth and with what strength I had left, I called on my fire.
“Stop it!” I screamed to Diana.
I inched closer, the rope still in my hands as I prayed to the Goddess for help. In a blur of movement, I called on the fire and burned the ropes. I prayed she wouldn’t but it was too late.
Viktor grabbed at her ankles and she stumbled as she darted towards me. My hands slashed forward to protect myself and I aimed for her chest. My claws sliced across her throat and every piece of me screamed as I looked into the eyes of the girl who used to be my light in the dark. I found her eyes, her grip on me loosening as blood poured down from her neck.
“No!” I yelled, my voice raw as she staggered back. She held onto my arm and took me as she fell to the ground.
“Take care of… my pack,” she gasped.
“No, no, no,” I begged. This couldn’t be happening. This was a terrible dream. This doesn’t make any sense. “You don’t need to ask me to take care of them. You’re not going anywhere.”
“Why?” I ask as tears stream down my face.
“Why?!” I scream.
“You took everything,” she choked. I looked into her eyes, she was broken, and she was dying. She smiled up at me.
“I haven’t, I didn’t,” I tell her. At this point, I’m shaking my head in disbelief.
“I’ll be able to see him now, won’t I?” She said quietly, as blood spurted from her mouth. She tried in vain to wipe it away.
“Who?” I ask.
“Rich,” she said before coughing. The blood splattered onto my cheek and my heart seized.
“You’re not making any sense, Diana,” I scream. “Why would you care about Rich?” I asked as tears ran down my cheeks. “Why was he worth trying to kill my mate, my family, and me?” My questions fall on deaf ears. She isn’t even looking at me anymore.
One of her hands lowers to her flat belly.“Will I be able to see him now? And our baby?” She asked, the tears stopped flowing, and her eyes dimmed. “I-I,” I choke.
I cried as her body dropped back against the ground and her grip loosened before falling. My heart shattered as I thought about her reason. Why. All the pieces connected and everything clicked.
It all made sense now and I let the sobs rack my body and the tears fall as I finally realize what I’d done.
