Tangled Vows

Chapter 6

As soon as we stepped inside, Julian slammed the door shut behind us, his face a mask of fury. “I can’t believe this is happening,” he muttered, running a hand through his hair.

“Neither can I,” I replied, my voice steady despite the chaos in my mind. “We need to talk about what we saw tonight.”

Julian turned to me, his eyes narrowing. “What do you want me to say, Sophia? That I’m part of some shady dealings? Because I’m not. My hands are clean.”

“Then explain those photographs,” I shot back, crossing my arms. “They linked your family directly to offshore accounts. You can’t just brush this off as a misunderstanding.”

His anger flared. “You think I’m defending Rafael? He’s the one who has it out for me! He’s always been bitter about being disowned. I wouldn’t put it past him to sabotage this auction just to get back at our father.”

“Are you serious?” I replied, disbelief washing over me. “You’re so quick to defend him. What about the things we saw tonight? The documents? The evidence of corruption? If Rafael wanted to sabotage you, then he would have done so long before now. Why wait for the auction?”

“Because he’s patient, and he knows how to play the game,” Julian spat, anger etched on his face. “He’s always been one step ahead. You don’t understand the lengths he’ll go to.”

“Because I’m tired of being played, Julian!” I fired back, frustration bubbling to the surface. “I came back to uncover the truth about my mother’s death, not to get caught up in your vendettas against each other. You need to realize that this is bigger than the two of you!”

The words hung in the air between us, a heavy reminder of the stakes involved. The memories of our past flooded back—the way we’d trusted each other, shared our dreams, and how quickly that had all unraveled. Now, I felt more like an outsider in his world, caught between the loyalties of two brothers who were entangled in a web of lies.

“I can’t just sit back and let him destroy everything,” Julian said, his voice low but filled with intensity. “You don’t understand what he’s capable of. He’s been waiting for an opportunity like this to bring me down.”

“And you don’t see that you’re doing the same to him?” I countered, my heart pounding. “You’re letting your anger cloud your judgment. Rafael is still family, whether you like it or not. You have to confront this together.”

“Together?” Julian scoffed, his disbelief palpable. “You think I can work with the man who wants to take everything from me? The man who still blames your father for his exile? You’re naive if you think I would ever trust him again.”

I took a deep breath, struggling to contain my frustration. “Julian, trust is not something that can be built overnight, but it’s also not something that can be shattered without consequences. I’m not asking you to forgive Rafael, but I need you to be open to the possibility that he might be telling the truth.”

“Open to the possibility?” Julian’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “You’re being manipulated, Sophia. You’re letting your emotions guide you, just like you did before.”

“Stop it,” I interrupted, feeling my own emotions bubble over. “You’re the one who’s refusing to see the truth! Rafael has shown me nothing but honesty since I returned. Maybe you’re just too caught up in your need to control everything to realize it.”

Julian stepped closer, his face inches from mine, his eyes ablaze with intensity. “You don’t know him like I do. He’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and you’re too blinded by your desire to play the hero to see it.”

“Maybe I’m just tired of being your pawn in this family drama,” I replied, stepping back to create some distance between us. “I came back for my own reasons, Julian—not to play games or pick sides.”

He flinched at my words, and for a moment, I could see the vulnerability beneath his bravado. But it was quickly replaced by the cold mask he wore so well. “You think you can just waltz back into this family and make everything right? You don’t understand the stakes here. This isn’t just about us.”

“No, it’s not just about us,” I said, my voice softening slightly. “But it’s about your family’s future—and mine. If we don’t figure out who’s behind this, we could both lose everything.”

He rubbed the back of his neck, a sign of his frustration. “Fine. But don’t think for a second that I’ll trust him. I’ll do what needs to be done to protect this company—even if that means taking Rafael down.”

My heart sank at the resolve in his words. “Julian, you can’t approach this as a war. We need to be smart about it. If Rafael is involved in something deeper, we have to find proof. We can’t rely solely on accusations.”

“Then what do you suggest?” he asked, his expression hardening again. “How do we find out the truth without putting ourselves at risk?”

I thought for a moment, piecing together the threads of information I had. “We start by investigating the photographs. I need to see if there’s a way to trace them back to the source. If we can find out who took them, we might uncover the truth behind the allegations.”

“And how do you plan on doing that?” he asked, skepticism lacing his tone.

“I have contacts,” I replied, recalling my connections from my years as a lawyer. “People who specialize in digital forensics. If I can get my hands on those photographs, they might be able to extract metadata or clues that could point us in the right direction.”

“Fine,” Julian relented, his voice still laced with doubt. “But if we do this, we do it my way. I’m not letting Rafael get the upper hand.”

“Agreed,” I said, my resolve strengthening. “But remember, Julian, this is about the truth. No more games, no more lies. We owe it to ourselves—and to my mother.”
