The blade sliced into my left arm, sending a sharp sting through my body.
The sight of my blood seemed to electrify Dave. A wild, unhinged laugh burst from him, as if hurting me for his precious Amber was the highest honor.
Gritting my teeth against the pain, I spat out, "You think you're doing this for her? She's using you!"
"They're going to be living it up while you're rotting in a cell!"
For a split second, Dave hesitated, his grip on the knife faltering. Then he screamed, "Shut up! I see right through your lies!"
I ducked as the knife swiped past my head. "987456! That's my phone password—check the video yourself!"
He froze. The video of Tommy and Amber together in the office was right there, waiting.
"All you're doing is clearing the way for them!"
His expression twisted into something feral, inhuman. "NO! That's not true! Amber promised... she promised she'd be waiting for me right outside! She said she'd defend me! We're gonna get married, have kids... have the family we always talked about!"
He was completely gone, lost in a fantasy.
"It's not too late! You can still walk away from this! Just let me go!"
His eyes flickered with doubt, but then a terrifying madness took over. "I'll kill you... then I'll kill Tommy! That way, Amber will have no one but me! We'll still be together!"
"You idiot!"
I knew I was out of time.
The knife came down.
