POV Kiara
She emerged from the shadows like death itself. But something is horribly wrong with her appearance. Her once-elegant features are twisted with madness.
Wild laughter spills from her lips as her eyes burn with unhinged fervor.
"My beautiful daughter," she croons, her voice switching between maternal affection and predatory hunger. "What a magnificent carnage you've inspired!"
"You're insane…" I breathe, backing away as I realize my mother has completely lost her grip on reality.
Her laughter intensifies, echoing unnaturally through the blood-soaked clearing. The sound makes my skin crawl with how wrong it is.
"Insane? I'm a visionary!" she shrieks, gesturing at the bodies scattered around us. "All these deaths are just the beginning of our new world!"
The fight erupts with terrifying intensity. Jacqueline moves with ancient vampire speed that makes Aleron look slow. Her claws extend to razor sharpness as she strikes at me with murderous intent.
"I gave you life, and I can take it away!" she screams, her attacks becoming increasingly frenzied.
I barely dodge her first strike, feeling her claws rake across my shoulder. The pain explodes through my body as her nails tear through flesh and draw blood. My hybrid healing kicks in immediately, but not fast enough to prevent the damage.
"You're my mother!" I cry out, the words torn from my throat.
I'm being forced to defend myself against the woman who gave me life. The psychological pain cuts deeper than any physical wound ever could.
Jacqueline's response is another burst of manic laughter.
"Mother, yes! And mothers make hard choices for their children's futures!"
Our supernatural abilities clash violently as we circle each other in the destroyed clearing. My hybrid strength matches her ancient vampire power, creating devastating impacts that shatter the remaining trees around us. Boulders crack apart when we slam into them.
She moves faster than I can track sometimes, appearing behind me before I can turn. When her hand closes around my throat, her grip threatens to crush my windpipe completely.
"You'll thank me when you see what we accomplish together," she whispers with deranged tenderness, her face inches from mine.
I break free by driving my elbow into her ribs, hearing bones crack under the impact. She releases me with a hiss of pain and rage.
Spinning around, I strike back with my own claws. They find their mark across her face, leaving deep gashes from temple to jaw. The wounds heal slowly due to my hybrid nature affecting her vampire healing abilities.
Jacqueline's shriek of rage and pain is almost inhuman. "You ungrateful child! I planned everything for you!"
"I never asked for your plans!" I shout back, dodging another vicious swipe of her claws.
The battle becomes more brutal as we exchange devastating blows. Her fist connects with my ribs, and I hear several cracks under the impact. Breathing becomes agonizing as broken bones shift with each movement.
She grabs my left arm and twists viciously, nearly breaking the bone completely. My arm hangs uselessly at my side as pain shoots through my entire body.
But watching my mother's complete mental breakdown hurts worse than any physical damage. This madwoman fighting me is nothing like the loving parent I fantasized about my entire life.
"I dreamed of you," I gasp through my pain, tears mixing with blood on my cheeks. "I wanted a mother who would love me, not this monster!"
Jacqueline's eyes blaze with insane fury. "Love? This IS love! I'm freeing both our species from the weakness of coexistence!"
"By killing everyone?"
"By killing the right people!"
She launches herself at me again, her speed incredible even for an ancient vampire. I barely manage to deflect her attack, but her claws still rake across my stomach, leaving deep gashes that immediately start bleeding.
My hybrid healing works frantically to keep up with the damage, but she's inflicting wounds faster than I can recover from them.
As our fight reaches its climax, both of us are bloodied and battered. My supernatural healing struggles to keep pace with the injuries she's giving me. Her face is a mask of blood from where my claws marked her.
Jacqueline's laughter has become completely unhinged. Her eyes reflect nothing but madness and genocidal purpose. She moves like a wild animal instead of the sophisticated vampire who raised a coven.
"You could have ruled beside me," she snarls, circling me like a predator. "You could have been the bridge between our species. Instead, you choose to die with them."
"I choose to protect innocent people."
"There are no innocent people! Everyone carries the poison of hatred!"
She prepares for what looks like a killing blow, her claws extending to their full deadly length. Power radiates from her body as she gathers her ancient vampire strength for a final strike.
I'm too injured to dodge effectively. My ribs scream with pain. My useless left arm won't respond to commands. Blood loss makes me dizzy and slow.
That's when both Aleron and Thomen's voices scream through my mental bonds simultaneously.
"We're coming! Hold on!" Thomen's werewolf determination floods through our mate bond.
"Don't give up!" Aleron's vampire fury burns through our soulmate connection.
But they may be too late. Jacqueline is already moving, her final attack aimed straight at my heart. Her claws glitter with my blood as she strikes.
I close my eyes and brace for the impact that will end everything.
