chapter 28

POV Kiara

Time seems to slow to a crawl.

Every detail becomes crystal clear. The madness burning in her ancient eyes. The blood coating her extended claws. The twisted smile on her lips as she prepares to kill her own daughter.

My instincts surge with desperate power. In that split second before her strike lands, I manage one final, desperate counterattack. My hand pierces through her chest with a sickening crack of ribs breaking.

I feel her bones splinter under the force as my fingers find her heart.

"I'm sorry," I whisper through my tears as her mad eyes widen in complete shock.

She never expected me to fight back with lethal force. In her twisted mind, she probably thought I'd submit to her will in the end.

"No..." she gasps, blood flowing from her lips as her body begins to shut down. "You were supposed to... rule with me..."

Her expression flickers between the madness that's consumed her and something that might be maternal recognition. For just a moment, I see the woman who once loved my father. The vampire who wanted peace between our species.

Then her eyes go blank forever.

As her body begins crumbling to ash in my arms, I collapse to my knees. My left shoulder screams with agony from being dislocated. My ribs feel like they're on fire with each breath.

Deep gashes across my stomach and arms bleed freely onto the forest floor.

"The wheel stops here," I say to the empty battlefield, my voice broken with grief and exhaustion. "No more hatred. No more blood passed from generation to generation."

The words feel hollow as I cradle the ashes of the mother I never really had. She gave me life but never gave me love. She saw me as a weapon instead of a daughter.

The physical pain is nothing compared to the devastating realization that I'm truly orphaned now. I killed the only biological parent I had left. The fantasy of family reunion dies with her final breath.

Through the trees, I hear the synchronized sounds of Thomen and Aleron fighting side by side against the remaining clan members. Their partnership has become seamlessly effective despite years of being enemies.

"Behind you!" Thomen's voice calls out clearly.

"Got him," comes Aleron's immediate response, followed by his warning, "Two more on your right."

Thomen's werewolf strength complements Aleron's vampire speed perfectly. They cover each other's weaknesses and amplify each other's strengths in ways I never expected.

The sounds of battle gradually fade until an eerie silence settles over the battlefield. No more clashing weapons.

No more shouts of pain or rage. Just the quiet of the ending.

Heavy footsteps approach through the trees. Two sets, moving quickly but carefully.

Thomen and Aleron reach me simultaneously, both bloodied but alive. They find me sitting in the ashes of my mother, tears streaming down my face while I hold my injured arm against my chest.

Neither speaks immediately. They simply kneel beside me on either side, offering their presence as comfort. Their silent support means more than any words could right now.

"It's over," I whisper, looking at my two mates who've learned to work together despite everything between them. "She's gone, and I never had her at all."

Thomen gently examines my injuries with careful hands.

"Your shoulder needs to be reset," he says softly. "And these cuts need stitches."

At the same time, Aleron checks the perimeter for remaining threats, his vampire senses scanning for any surviving enemies. Their coordinated care feels like the family I've always needed.

"We need to help the wounded," I say, trying to stand despite my injuries.

"You need medical attention first," Thomen objects.

"Our people are dying out there."

Together, the three of us begin the grim work of helping wounded pack members to safety. My left arm is completely useless, but I direct rescue efforts while Thomen and Aleron carry the most seriously injured to shelter.

Bodies lie scattered throughout the forest. Some are pack members I've known for years. Others are vampires who followed my mother's genocidal vision.

All of them are someone's family.

The battlefield that began as a site of hatred and revenge slowly becomes a place of healing and unity. Pack members work alongside each other without regard for rank or position. Everyone focused on saving lives.

"Alpha!" One of my scouts approaches, supporting a wounded warrior. "Dr. Cross is here with medical supplies."

Relief floods through me. We're going to need all the help we can get.

Dr. Cross emerges from the tree line with several assistants carrying medical bags and portable equipment. Her professional demeanor doesn't hide the shock in her eyes as she takes in the carnage.

"How many wounded?" she asks immediately, already moving toward the most seriously injured.

"Too many," I reply.

She works with efficient precision, prioritizing the worst cases first. Her assistants spread out to help where they can.

"Your shoulder," she says to me between patients.

"Others first."

"I can reset it quickly while I work."

She manipulates my dislocated shoulder back into place with a sharp pop that makes me gasp. The immediate relief is incredible.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. We have a long night ahead of us."

As dawn approaches, the true scope of our losses becomes clear. We lost twelve pack members. The French clan lost fifteen, including Jacqueline herself.

Too many deaths for anyone to call this a victory.

"What happens now?" Thomen asks as we watch Dr. Cross work.

I look at my two mates, both exhausted but alive. At my pack members helping each other recover. At the evidence of a war that finally ended.

"Now we rebuild," I say. "And we make sure this never happens again."
