POV Kiara

"It seems we are not alone," Aleron murmurs, his head tilting slightly as his enhanced vampire senses pick up sounds I can't detect yet.

I'm still reeling from what just happened between us. The soulmate bond thrums through my body like electricity. Every nerve feels more alive than it ever has before.

"How is it even possible that Thomen can feel everything?" I ask desperately.

My voice shakes as I realize the full implications.

My true mate experienced every moment of my bonding with Aleron through our werewolf connection.

Aleron's response is a predatory smile that tells me nothing and everything at the same time. His expression holds secrets I'm not ready to learn.

"The lesson has been successfully learned," he says cryptically. His form already starts fading back into the shadows with that grace all ancient vampires possess. "It is time for you to go find your angry puppy."

"Wait!" I call out, but he's already disappearing. "You can't just leave me with more questions!"

"You have everything you need now," his voice echoes from the darkness between the trees. "The bonds are complete. The rest is up to you."

The sound of vehicles crashing through the forest gets closer. Multiple engines, moving fast through terrain that should be impossible to navigate at that speed. My pack members are coming to find me.

I can't let them see me like this. I can't let them find evidence of what happened between me and Aleron in this destroyed clearing.

I run toward home, using my enhanced speed to cover the distance quickly. The world blurs around me as I push my abilities harder than I ever have before.

Trees become streaks of brown and green. The ground disappears beneath my feet.

I reach our house while Thomen is still absent. The silence feels both comforting and terrifying. I need time to compose myself before facing him.

I rush into our bathroom and turn the shower on as hot as it will go. Steam fills the small space as I step under the spray. The water cascades over my skin, but it can't wash away what happened.

I can still taste Aleron's blood on my tongue. I can still feel the echo of our connection pulsing through my veins. My vampire nature feels satisfied in a way it never has before, and that terrifies me.

How can something that should feel wrong feel so right?

I scrub at my skin until it turns red, trying to remove any trace of his scent. Werewolves have incredibly sensitive noses. If Thomen smells Aleron on me, there won't be any way to explain it.

But even after washing thoroughly, I know the real evidence isn't something I can scrub away. The soulmate bond changed something fundamental inside me. I can feel it humming beneath my skin like a second heartbeat.

I wrap myself in a towel and step out of the bathroom, hoping I have more time to prepare.

I don't.

Thomen stands in our bedroom doorway, his expression stormy with confusion and hurt. His brown eyes search my face for answers I'm not ready to give.

"Why aren't you answering me?" he demands, his voice tight with frustration. "I've been calling through our mental link for the past hour."

My stomach drops. I was so focused on Aleron during our encounter that I completely blocked out Thomen's attempts to communicate through our mate bond.

"And what was that?" he continues, his words becoming more hesitant. "What I felt through our connection. Were you... were you doing something by yourself?"

He trails off in embarrassment, clearly struggling to understand the intense arousal he experienced secondhand. Through our werewolf bond, he felt the overwhelming fulfillment of my bonding with Aleron.

But he has no idea what caused it.

Instead of the shame I expected to feel, I find myself rushing into his arms. The guilt I should be drowning in is surprisingly light. The constant inner conflict that's been tearing me apart for weeks has finally quieted.

Bonding with Aleron balanced something inside me. My vampire side no longer fights against my werewolf nature. For the first time since this all started, I feel whole.

"Without you, I would never," I say with a radiant smile. The lie comes easily as I gaze into his concerned eyes. "I just had a very good dream."

I watch his shoulders relax as relief floods through him. The tension that's been building in his posture melts away. He returns my smile with equal warmth and renewed hope.

"Are you feeling better already?" he asks, stroking my damp hair with gentle hands. "You seem more like yourself than you have in days."

"Yes," I answered immediately.

The truth is evident in my renewed energy, even if the cause isn't what he thinks. I pull back enough to look at him properly.

"What happened? How did the sortie go?"

That's when I notice the tension that still lingers in his posture. Something about his mission bothers him. Thomen's expression grows serious as he meets my gaze.

"We didn't find anyone in our territory. But we discovered evidence of an unknown vampire clan that's arrived in the neighboring territory."

My blood turns to ice. "What kind of evidence?"

"Scent markers. Territorial markings. Signs of a large group setting up some kind of temporary base." His jaw tightens. "These aren't like the vampires we usually deal with, Kiara. Their scents are different. Older. More... ancient."

Aleron's earlier words echo in my mind about my mother wanting to meet me. The pieces fall into place with terrifying clarity.

My vampire mother, Jacqueline Moreau, is here. The French coven has crossed the ocean to find me.

"I think they've relocated from France for some reason," I explain to Thomen, trying to keep my voice steady. "And it seems that my mother has come to visit me."

Thomen's eyes widen. "Your mother is dead."

"No, she isn't. That was another lie to protect me." I take a shuddering breath. "Marcus told me the truth. My mother is a vampire who leads an ancient French coven."

"And now she's here."

"Now she's here."

The implications hit both of us at the same time. A vampire coven powerful enough to cross continents isn't here for a social visit. They want something. And the only thing that makes sense is me.

My mother has come to claim her hybrid daughter.
