POV Kiara
Marcus opens his door before we can even knock. His weathered face shows no surprise at seeing us standing on his doorstep in the middle of the evening. It's like he's been waiting for this visit.
"I know why you came," he says solemnly, stepping aside to let us into his modest home.
The weight of unspoken truths hangs heavy in the air as I meet his knowing gaze. He's carried secrets for decades, and now it's time to share them.
"My mother," I say simply, my voice carrying years of unanswered questions. "I want to know everything about her."
Thomen stays close beside me as Marcus leads us to his comfortable living room.
The space feels warm and lived-in, filled with furniture that's seen generations of pack members come and go. Photos of werewolves from decades past line the walls and shelves.
Marcus pours steaming tea with careful ceremony, as if the ritual will somehow make the coming revelations easier to bear. His hands are steady despite his age, but I can see the weight he's carried in the lines around his eyes.
"Jacqueline appeared out of nowhere," he begins, settling into his worn armchair. "This was about thirty years ago, during the early attempts at peace negotiations between our species."
I lean forward, desperate for every detail about the woman who gave birth to me.
"At first, she was just an asset to your father," Marcus continues. "She provided crucial information about vampires. Their weaknesses, their territories, their internal politics. She tracked her own kind but tried to remain neutral and diplomatic."
"She was a spy," Thomen says, his voice tight with suspicion.
"Not exactly." Marcus shakes his head. "She genuinely wanted peace. Jacqueline shared her vision of ending the war between our species. She wanted to stop the bloodshed that had claimed so many lives on both sides."
His voice takes on a warmer tone as he continues the story.
"The more years she spent with our pack, the more she became part of our family. Many of us grew to trust her, even love her like a sister. She had this way about her, this ability to see the good in everyone."
Marcus's eyes soften with fond memories.
"She helped in the kitchens. She played with the children. She learned our customs and traditions. For the first time in our history, we had a vampire who understood what it meant to be part of a werewolf pack."
I try to imagine this woman. This vampire who somehow fit into werewolf society. It's hard to picture when everything I've been taught says our species are natural enemies.
"We noticed immediately when she and Jacob grew close," Marcus continued, glancing at me. "Their connection was undeniable. He would light up whenever she entered a room. She would seek him out during pack meetings, standing close enough to touch but never crossing that line in public."
My father fell in love with a vampire. The Alpha of our pack chose a member of the enemy species as his mate.
The implications still boggle my mind.
"Then they decided to get married," Marcus says, his voice filled with bittersweet emotion. "It was a small ceremony, just close family and friends. But they were genuinely happy, despite the challenges their union represented."
"What kind of challenges?" I ask.
"Both species have members who couldn't accept the match. There were threats from vampire clans who saw Jacqueline as a traitor. There were werewolves in other packs who thought Jacob had lost his mind."
Marcus sips his tea slowly, watching ahead of him at nothing specifically, as if images of memories consumed his mind.
"But your parents didn't care. They were determined to prove that love could bridge the gap between our kinds," he continues. "And a couple of years after that, Jacqueline became pregnant."
This is the part I've been dreading and anticipating simultaneously. The story of my birth, the event that changed everything.
"Our midwife healer examined her regularly throughout the pregnancy," Marcus explains. But no one knows exactly how you were born, Kiara.
Marcus's expression grows darker as he reaches the heart of the mystery.
"The labor began late one evening during a thunderstorm. Jacob took Jacqueline deep into the forest to one of our most isolated safe houses, along with our most trusted midwife healer."
He pauses, his eyes distant with painful memories.
"They wanted complete privacy, Jacob was terrified that something would go wrong, that he'd lose both his mate and his child."
"What happened?" I whisper.
"In the morning, he returned alone, carrying you as a newborn. No Jacqueline, no midwife. He never spoke of what happened that night, not even to me."
The silence stretches painfully as the implications sink in. My father came back with me but without my mother or the woman who helped deliver me.
What happened to them?
"Jacob was never the same after that night.” Marcus admits. “He raised you with love and devotion, but there was always a sadness in him that never went away."
I find my voice to ask the question burning inside me. "How did you know I was a hybrid?"
Marcus meets my gaze with gentle understanding. "Your father told me the truth before he died. When he knew Aleron's betrayal was coming, when he realized he might not survive the ambush, he called me aside."
"What did he tell you exactly?"
"That you carried both werewolf and vampire blood in your veins. That your vampire heritage would likely manifest someday, triggered by trauma or exposure to vampire blood. He made me promise to watch over you if the truth ever came to light."
My father knew. He knew what I was and he protected me anyway.
"He also told me to contact someone if your vampire side ever awakened," Marcus adds quietly.
"Who?"
"Your mother. Jacqueline is still alive, Kiara. She's been waiting all these years for the right time to return to you."
As we prepare to leave, Marcus's story finally completes, my mind reels with everything I've learned.
Thomen and I walk home in contemplative silence. The night air feels thick with approaching change. Everything I thought I knew about my family has been rewritten once again.
Just as we near our house, Aleron's familiar voice slides into my consciousness with perfect timing and ominous certainty.
"Your mother is waiting for you."
