chapter 26

POV Kiara

The coordinated attacks explode across multiple fronts simultaneously. Reports flood in from every direction as Jacqueline's forces strike with military precision.

"Northern patrols need immediate support," I declare, my Alpha instincts directing me toward where I can hear the heaviest fighting through the night air.

"Western borders are under assault too," Thomen responds grimly, his face set with determination. "Aleron and I will handle that sector together."

The idea of them working as partners still feels strange, but I trust both of them to keep each other alive.

Through our supernatural bonds, I maintain constant awareness of both mates as they head toward their assigned battle zone. Their mental communication flows directly through my consciousness, letting me hear their coordination in real time.

"Three vampires approaching from your left," Aleron's voice warns through whatever connection now exists between them.

"Got them covered," comes Thomen's steady reply, his confidence reassuring despite the danger.

Despite years of being enemies, they're moving with synchronized precision. Aleron's vampire knowledge combines with Thomen's werewolf strength to cover each other's weaknesses perfectly.

I race toward the northern battleground where the sounds of combat grow louder with each step. My enhanced senses pick up the metallic scent of spilled blood growing stronger as I get closer.

The smell hits me like a physical blow. It's not just blood, but death itself. Fear and desperate violence saturate the forest air so thickly I can taste it.

My hybrid nature reacts viscerally to the carnage ahead, both my werewolf and vampire sides recognizing a hunting ground drenched in violence.

Breaking through a line of trees, I discover a sight that stops me cold.

Bodies lie twisted and broken across the forest floor. Werewolves and vampires alike, their supernatural healing useless against wounds that proved fatal. Arms bent at unnatural angles.

Throats torn open. Eyes staring sightlessly at the night sky.

The sight contradicts everything I've been fighting for. This isn't victory. This is just senseless slaughter.

"This has to stop," I whisper, pain lancing through my chest like a physical wound. "No one else should die for this madness."

A howl for help cuts through my grief, pulling me back to the present. Someone is still alive and fighting. Someone I can still save.

I follow the sound deeper into the carnage until I find two vampires attacking a wounded pack member. They move with frenzied bloodlust that goes beyond normal predatory behavior. Something has driven them into a feeding frenzy.

"Stay away from him!" I snarl, my hybrid abilities surging as I engage them both simultaneously.

My enhanced speed lets me move between them faster than they can track. My claws extend to their full length, sharper and stronger than normal werewolf weapons. The vampire side of my nature knows exactly where to strike for maximum damage.

Their madness makes them unpredictable but sloppy. They attack wildly instead of using coordinated vampire tactics. I dispatch them quickly despite their supernatural speed, their bodies crumbling to ash around my wounded pack member.

"Can you move?" I ask him, checking his injuries.

"Yes, Alpha. Thank you."

"Get to the safe zone. Now."

He limps away toward our protected area while I scan for more threats.

More vampires appear almost immediately, drawn by the sounds of our battle. They emerge from the shadows between trees like nightmares made flesh.

One after another, they attack with increasing desperation, as if driven by something beyond normal vampire instincts.

I fight with mechanical precision, my hands becoming covered in blood and ash as I cut through opponent after opponent. Each victory feels hollow as the body count rises around me.

This isn't strategy or tactics. This is just killing.

The forest floor becomes littered with the remains of both species. My people. My mother's people. All dying for a war that should have ended years ago.

Between fights, I catch glimpses of other battles raging through the trees. Flashes of silver weapons reflecting moonlight. The glow of emergency flares our fighters use to maintain visibility.

Howls of pain and rage from both werewolves and vampires.

My enhanced hearing picks up Thomen and Aleron's continued coordination through our bonds. They're holding the western front, but barely. The vampire numbers are overwhelming even their combined abilities.

Another group of three vampires rushes toward me from different directions, trying to surround and overwhelm me. I spin between them, using my hybrid speed and strength to stay ahead of their coordinated assault.

My claws find throats and hearts with lethal precision. Vampire combat training from Aleron combined with werewolf instincts from years of Alpha leadership. I'm becoming something more deadly than either species alone.

But for every vampire I destroy, two more seem to take their place.

That's when the scent reaches my enhanced senses. Ancient power mixed with familiar perfume that makes my blood run cold. A presence that carries centuries of authority and calculated violence.

Measured footsteps approach through the carnage with deliberate calm. Each step echoes with the confidence of someone who has never doubted their own dominance. Someone who sees this battlefield as nothing more than a chess game.

I freeze mid-strike as recognition floods through me.

Jacqueline Moreau's voice rings out through the night air, carrying maternal mockery that chills me to the bone.

"Look what you've done, daughter."
