Jake

Was she watching how they fought?

Would she say anything about their fighting style?

Was she looking for weaknesses?

Were they really here to help us?

My wolf, Jason, mentally shook his head. He didn’t care for the witches either but he’d been more focused on my mentality. As if I were stressed and close to the brink of no return. I had something to protect, I had people in my life that I wanted to keep safe.

Jason suggested we let the witches spar with the warriors. I was tempted by the idea of seeing them on the field. Our warriors would be able to learn how they fight.

It would have made things a lot more interesting. Shit, it would have made my day better but I wasn’t about to risk them for it. I wouldn’t feel comfortable allow it.

I couldn’t deny that it would be good for not only the warriors but for the pack. Knowing how the witches fought and defended themselves would only prove to be helpful in the future.

Knowing how our enemy moved would only be beneficial. Yes, I still saw them them as the enemy. Nothing they did or promised to do would convince me otherwise.

I would never trust one of their kind. It wasn’t only because they were witches, it was because of what they were capable of doing. Their strength and power couldn’t be ignored.

Given the chance to spar with the warriors, they would be focused on their opponent. I would be able to watch them and find any weak spots we still hadn’t identified.

Kacie and Viktor were happy when they came to our aid. They’d seen help, whereas when I saw them that day during the battle, I didn’t see help.

I’d watched them fight against the rogues, if you could call it fighting. They had laid waste to the rogues. Other than than the splattering of blood, they hadn’t even been touched.

At the end of the battle, they were without a single scratch or bruise. They were a force to be reckoned with and I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me otherwise.

The way they fought that day was only a confirmation to my fears and suspicions. They were dangerous and I wasn’t going to let my guard down.

I wasn’t interested in watching the warriors spar and sweat. I had only been in their company for a few hours but I was ready to excuse myself. I couldn’t do that until I saw them back to the packhouse.

After they got an eyeful, Nyx and Jade were ready to head back. I didn’t want to share a meal with them. I led them to the packhouse and only after I’d let them past the sitting area did I excuse myself.

After they headed into the kitchen, I made a beeline for the door. I stripped, did I shift and tear through my clothes. I ran in the direction I knew Viktor, Jamie and the Deltas would be.

Jason was elated to be free and was determined as he pushed forward. It was only after passing through two territories that I was finally about to catch onto Viktor’s scent.

Jason picked up his pace and barreled past the pack members walking outside. My shoulders sagged with relief when they came into view right outside of the second section lines.

When we caught up to them, the Deltas pulled back and stepped into formation behind me. Flash didn’t say anything to me and we ran in silence.

When I didn’t greet either of them and Viktor didn’t say anything through our link, Jamie’s wolf sped up. Her eyes remained forward at all times and as if reading the room, she barked at the Deltas to follow.

It made me wonder if it had been silent since they left. Had something happened? The Deltas were quick to respond and said their goodbyes to me via the link before they rushed past me.

I was left alone with Viktor’s wolf. I should have said something, even Jason didn’t say anything. The three of us hadn’t been time to talk about the meeting or the battle.

There had been nothing but relief from him. After the battle, Viktor only cared that we were safe. I worried that his focus weighed heavily on our safety instead of the threat the witches posed. He’d left no room for debate and I knew I had to trust in him and Kacie.

Pain erupted along my right shoulder as his large frame slammed against me. Jason whined as Flash’s wide shoulder bumped against ours again. The ground shook under my paws as my alpha thundered past me. Flash’s eyes were playful, his black fur swayed majestically as the wind danced through it.

His hard tail whipped across my snout and he flicked his tail in the opposite direction as I snapped my teeth in warning. Despite his playfulness, the unease I’d felt refused to disperse. I couldn’t get myself to shake off the suspicion and angst.

My paw sunk into the mud with a squishing sound. The ground was moist as I fought the urge to speed up and nip at his tail. He was being playful but my mind still wasn’t fully present.

It wasn’t often that Viktor let loose and was playful. He hasn’t shown me this side of him in a long time. A really long fucking time. Tightening my jaw, I fight the urge to growl at him. He chooses now to tease me? Flash’s voice filled my mind and interrupted my thoughts.

Why the long face?

What do you think, Alpha?

What’s bugging you? You’re out of the packhouse! Don’t you feel good now that you’ve shifted? Let go of your stresses and be free. You’re running with one of the two loves of your life.

This is hardly for pleasure. Jamie isn’t far off and we’re working.

Oh, I’ll show you pleasure.
