Just over this hill, we would find our warriors, our deltas fighting against the elders. My mate came to a stop just atop the hill and I picked up my speed. I followed him with my sisters atop the hill and surveyed the scene before me. My hand dropped to my stomach and a gasp escaped from my lips as Nyx and Clara came to a stop by my side.
The small village that stood here was no more. The homes had been stomped to the ground and bodies lay all over the ground. Blood covered the field and if we didn’t stop the enemy, we would be fighting in a pool of blood.
The field was covered with our warriors fighting against the humanoids. Most of them looked just like the one I had battled the other day with Jade. I searched the field for her but couldn’t find her. Our warriors were putting up as much of a fight as the could against the large mud creatures. It had been almost impossible for me to bring the one I had fought against down. But I knew from that training session that it didn’t matter how many we brought down, more could be called upon instantly. They would only tire us out until we couldn’t fight anymore. In the end, if things kept going this way, we would all lose. The only way to bring down the humanoids was to find the witch in control of them. The only way to bring them down was to kill Jade.
My eyes widened as a large form ran past and jumped on Delta John. He fell down before the large mud creature’s teeth came down on him. Blood spurted out around him everywhere as the creature put its weight on him. He dropped it’s head down to the ground and shook it as it played with Delta John as if he were a toy. I gasped as the dog lifted it’s head, a small ball fell from his jaws, and rolled on the ground. A head. Delta John’s head came to a stop and unseeing eyes stared up at the sky. The dog’s eyes glowed yellow as it burrowed forward. It had to be at least twenty-five feet tall. It crushed people as it ran, leaving blood puddles behind.
“I need to stop that dog from getting deeper into the village. They’ll soon move on to the next and the next until there is no one left. Leave the dog to me. I’ll hold him off while the three of you find a way to get past the humanoids—”
“No, I’m staying with you!” I said.
“Kacie! You are my Queen, but I am your King. It’s too dangerous for you to stay by my side. I can’t focus on fighting the beast with everything I have if you are by my side. As much as I want to keep you close I know I won’t be able to focus one the beast if I have to worry about you!” Viktor shouted.
“Then don’t! I can’t worry about myself! I can defend myself,” I urged.
“How? You barely made it alive when you were up against one mud monster. Open your eyes! There are too many to count out there. I won’t take you with me into that. You’re safer with Nyx and Clara. So for once in your life LISTEN TO ME!” Viktor demanded.
“We’ll keep her safe.” I turned to look as Nyx stepped forward. She bowed her head before looking at Viktor. “You don’t need to worry about her. I won’t let anything happen to her. Do your best to hold it off until we can get to the source of it’s power,” Nyx said firmly.
“I’ll leave her to you,” Viktor said.
My mate nodded to Nyx. Knowing that Nyx is the strongest but give him some sense of peace. I wouldn’t argue with him if that’s what he needed to get himself into the right head space. I needed him to be free of distractions when he went up against the dog mud monster.
“The three of you need to find the source of their power and kill her—”
“We will do what we need to do to stop this fight,” Nyx said.
“If it comes to—”
“We will do what’s needed,” Nyx said.
“It doesn’t stop there. You’ll need to get to the elders,” Viktor said.
“I will focus on the witch responsible,” Nyx said.
“I will kill every one who is responsible. I will take down the elders,” I said.
“But not alone,” Clara said. She stepped forward. Her eyes were on Viktor. Maybe she could sense his nerves, his anxiety, his despair. “Kacie and I will face the elders together. There’s no need to worry.”
Viktor turned and looked at her. He stared into her eyes. I saw sorrow, an apology, and thankfulness in his gaze. He nodded and she gave him a tight smile. I may not owe Clara anything but I do need to do better. I need to make this better after this battle has been won. Viktor turned to me. His eyes searched my face, he took in my hair, my eyes, my nose, and lingered on my lips. When he was done, his eyes locked with mine.
I love you.
I love you too.
Be safe.
You too.
Viktor turned from us and I watched as he ran down the hill. He gathered speed and would soon meet the ground level. He lunged forward into the air and shifted. His body cracked and morphed into the shape of a wolf. Mighty long black fur sprouted out and covered his body as he shifted into Flash. He bounded toward the dog creature made from mud, and it turned toward him. It stepped away from it’s victim as he bled out. He took haggard breaths as the mud monster left him. The creature lowered itself to the ground before it snapped and charged toward my mate.
