Letting go

Chapter 30

Molly

By the miracle of god, I’m still holding on and somehow I’ve even managed to get a hold of the wood with my other hand but still, I know I don’t have much longer in me. This rain and wind are like something you see in a movie but I ain’t acting, this is real and I’m pretty much screwed here.

I try to look over my shoulder to see the old man but unless I want to break my neck I’m not getting a look at him anytime soon. I can still hear barking though which means the dog is ok, I just pray the old guy is too.

“Help! Please god, help us!” I catch his words as he continues to scream out. Considering the noise from the wind and rain his voice is loud but I don’t hold any hope that anyone will hear us.

Hell I doubt anyone is even out here with this storm. I want to say I wish I hadn’t come out here but if I didn’t there wouldn’t be anyone here to help the old guy. Although I’m not much freaking help right now am I!

My fingers are starting to cramp and it’s getting insanely painful causing me to scream out in frustration, anger, and pain. This is why I struggled to follow Archie’s lead in his faith in god. Surly god wouldn’t let this kind of shit happen?

Thinking of Archie right now is a shit move as it sends my mind right back to earlier. How the fuck could he do this to me? How could he cheat and still hold his faith? Did he know about the child? Did he support her? Jesus Christ this is going to drive me insane.

Another strong gust of wind sweeps across me rattling the bridge and forcing one of my hands closer to the edge. Fuck! Mind out of the gutter Molly, mind out of the gutter.

We need help and we need it now. “Help!” I scream as loud as I can. I know I properly won’t be heard but we have nothing else right now. The old guy continues to call out but I don’t hear everything he’s saying while the dog is barking with all he has.

My hand slips another inch and panic really starts to set in. I’m really scared, and despite the old guy, I feel completely alone. Visions start plaguing my mind once more of all the people in my life. All the people I’ll miss. All the things I won't get to experience. I’m slowly giving up hope. I don’t want to but I don’t see anything changing anytime soon.

I pull myself out of my pity party for one when I swear I hear voices. It’s more than likely noises in the wind as it whips around the trees.

“Molly!” Wait I swear I heard… Great now I’m imagining Tom's voice. Fuck I think I’m slowly losing my mind.

“Molly! Where are you?” Wait, I heard it again. Maybe it is my imagination but I’m going to hope for the best. “Tom!” I scream so loud my throat burns but I'll be in a much worse state if it isn't him.

“Molly! Molly!” God I think it really is him!

“Tom! The bridge!” I try to look around but I can’t see him but if by some miracle he can hear me through all of this and we’re saved then I’m going to apologize to god because only a miracle is going to save us now!

“Molly! Fuck Molly!” Movement catches the corner of my eye and the tears that I’ve been holding in burst out like a broken mains pipe. He’s really here, Tom's really here.

“Tom!” My hand moves another inch and now I have one solid hand on the wood but my other hand is barely hanging on. “Tom help him!”

“Who Molly?”

“The guy on the bank!” I can’t see what’s going on but just a few seconds later I hear Tom cursing and the dog once again barking.

My good hand slips a little bit and it terrifies me causing me to scream out. If that hand goes as close to the edge as my other hand then I won’t last no more than a few seconds. “Tom!”

I can hear him talking but most of his words are muffled by the sound of the rain and wind. I hear him screaming the word help before calling me again. “Please dear god Molly, hold on Please!"

Again his words go muffled but he continues to shout out and tells me to keep holding on. I’m holding on with all I have but I don’t see how we can get out of this. Tom is one person and no match for this storm.

The seconds feel like hours as Tom continues to try and keep me going while hopefully trying to help the old guy too. Somehow the wind and rain keep getting worse and I don’t even want to think about how much worse it is going to get.

“Molly keep holding on, help is coming!” Did he just say that help is coming? He couldn’t have, I must be imagining it, praying to hear the only words that give me a chance of surviving right now.

Just moments later more voices reach my ears but I know there aren’t really, maybe I’m hallucinating, maybe I hit my head when I fell and just don’t remember.

“Molly, hold on we’re going to get you down!” I definitely heard that! Who is it? I hear a slight thudding noise then use all my willpower not to break down when Tom appears in front of me and grabs onto my arms.

“Hey baby girl, I hate to break it to you but now is really not the time to be working out. We’re kind of in the middle of a little storm here.” He gives me a cheeky smile making me let out a little laugh but I see the look in his eyes. He’s scared and so am I.

“I got bored.” Now he’s the one laughing. “I’ll buy some board games. Now how about we get you back up from there?” Abso-fucking-lutley!

His grip on my arms tightens as I see two sets of feet heading my way. Zack and Jack’s faces quickly appearing in front of me cause more relief to fill me. Not one of these men will let me fall.

“Ok Molly, when I say now I want you to let your hands go. We won’t let you fall, darling, I promise.” I know Jack's telling the truth but the idea of letting go is still scary. Tom tightens his grip once more on my arms while Jack wraps his arms under my armpits.

They both start to pull but there’s nothing that I can do to help them. “Now!” Jack shouts. I close my eyes and pray for the best as I let go of the wood and feel myself being lifted. I feel hands go to my hips and catch sight of Zack as he helps pull me up.

We all land with a hard thud on the damp cold creaking bridge and yet I’ve never felt so relieved. “Shit, the guy. Tom, we have to help him!” I go to stand up but he stops me. “Christian and Callum have him, sweetie. He’s going to be ok.”

I sit up and look over the bridge to see Christian and Callum sitting up on the top of the river bank with the old guy. Christian has put his jacket on his upper body while Callum has put his over his legs. I’m guessing they're trying to warm him up some.

The old guy looks tired and cold but he doesn’t look too injured, well I hope anyway. I find myself smiling when I see the dog laying next to him when his head is on the guy's lap. That is loyalty right there.

“Wait… How are you all here?” Tom gives me a strange look making me want to laugh a little. “We got word of the storm that’s coming and I knew that you didn’t have your phone so I came to look for you.”

I love this guy so much “Thank you, Tom.” That is all I manage to get out but he knows what it means to me without words. That’s a bonus to being best friends.

“So how are you guys here?” I look toward Jack and Zack who are both getting up off the floor. “Tom called Christian and we were all with him.” He shrugs like it’s no big deal but it is. None of them needed to risk their selves in this weather, not for me.

“Why did you call Christian? Why’s he here?” He’s the last person that I would expect here. “He was the first number that I came to on my phone. He’s here because he wants to be Molly.

Christian wanted to help me… Well, that’s bloody new.
