We walk in silence as we head outside. I take the lead and she follows me to my car. I ignore the looks pack members are throwing my way. I’m sure word has gotten around of the new visitor that isn’t a wolf.
The look on Kacie’s face when we were in the room is eating at me. I can’t stop thinking about the way her bottom lip quivered when Clara walked into our room. I’ve got the rogue attacks to deal with, the rumor of the witch going around, and Clara stepping into our lives like she’s got some hold over me.
If this was the old days I would have had to prove my love for Kacie and loyalty to her and our pack by slaughtering this new female. I still need to prove my love for Kacie but without killing Clara.
I don’t like this feeling that Kacie thinks I’m cheating on her or might think we would. I wouldn’t do anything to hurt her.
“But we already have,” Flash whimpers. “We’ve already hurt her by Clara still being here and being on our territory. Even though the thought of hurting the witch doesn’t sit well with me.”
“I don’t like the thought of hurting her either… but I will prove my loyalty to Kacie,” I growl back at him.
I open the door to my car for her and she hops in before I close the door and head over to the driver’s side of the car. I haven’t so much as said a word to her the entire time she walked into my room. I didn’t look at her as we made our way outside.
Sighing, I open my door and hop in before shutting it closed. She remains silent as I drive. We don’t talk. “It feels wrong being here,” I tell Flash.
“True and false,” he says.
Something tugs on the bond and I feel it reaching out to her. It’s nothing like what I feel for Kacie but I still feel it.
“What are we supposed to do with her?” I ask him.
“Mate wants us to talk to her,” he says. I have suspicions that he likes the idea of spending the day with her. “And we need to eat.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I grumble.
We speed down the road and head out of town.
“Where are we going?” Flash asks.
“I’m not taking her out in town. What would the pack members think? Do you think the rumors wouldn’t grow and get out of hand? If word gets back to Kacie… she’d be humiliated and disrespected,” I tell him.
“The pack wouldn’t see her as a leader if she ignored a possible threat before she became Luna. She doesn’t know any of this so I’m looking out for her. We won’t go far.”
“Are you going to tell me where we’re going?” She asks. I keep my eyes on the road and answer.
“What? No visions today?” I ask.
She doesn’t respond.
“We’re going for breakfast,” I say.
She doesn’t say anything but I can feel the hurt coming off of her in waves.
“Look. I’m a dick. I’m not being the nicest but all I can think about is my mate at home hurt because of you,” I tell her. “Your presence alone hurts her. So I’m sorry that I’m not sorry.”
She quiet for a few minutes before she mumbles something so quietly I don’t hear what she said.
“What did you say?” I ask. “I didn’t hear you.”
“I’m your mate too,” she says louder.
I pull over on the shoulder and put the car in park. Gripping the steering wheel, I look out the window.
“Look… I’m going to be real with you,” I say honestly. I take a deep breath before I say the next words. I mean them with every fiber in my body but if I were to think of it from her perspective it would hurt like a bitch.
“I get that you might be confused because I let you come onto my territory and into my home. I’m going to be honest with you right now,” I say. Turning to her, I look her in the eye and ignore the way my heart beats a little faster.
“I already have a mate and I don’t have room in my heart or in my life for another. I know what Kacie said last night about us.” I point between the two of us, “but when and if it comes down to me choosing. between you and her,” I look her dead in the eyes, “there is no choice. I choose Kacie. I choose her today, tomorrow, and always.”
Clara bites down and grinds her teeth together.
“You are nothing and will always be nothing when it comes to her. The sooner you know that the better.” I drag my eyes from her and look forward. “I’m doing this because she thinks you’re owed or we’re owed whatever the hell this is.”
“You’re still here because I need to figure out what you are and why you’re here. If we’re really mates then I’ll reject you and you’ll accept it.” I get back on the road and fly over the speed limit. “And if you aren’t my mate…” I trail off and the silence in the air says enough.
“Do you think she’s cast a spell on us?” Flash asks me as I drive.
“Honestly? I don’t know but we need to figure out how to find out if what she says is true.” Even as I say this, I have no clue how to find out about destined mates or about a werewolf having two mates.
“Why would the Goddess give us two mates?” Flash asks aloud.
“That’s not the question I think we should be focused on,” I respond.
“What would be more important?” Flash growls irritably.
“If she is my mate, will rejecting her end a witches destined bond?”
