“Did you tell them about me and what I can do?” I asked.
“If I’m being honest, I didn’t at first. Hearing that war was waged over these wolves and their power put me on edge. I didn’t want people to know about you… What if they came after you?” Viktor said.
“If they knew about me maybe they would give us more answers!” I knew where he was coming from but I was upset and disappointed.
“I struggled with it but on the day I was coming back home, I told them,” Viktor said. “They didn’t believe me at first. Everyone knows witches are the only ones with powers. After I explained how it happened to you on the field during training, they believed me.”
“Did they offer any advice?” I asked.
Viktor put down his cutlery and looked me in the eye. “The elders advised us not to broadcast your gift and to keep it a secret from outsiders. They said the more other packs knew about it, the more dangerous it would be for you. It’s good that we know what happened in the past so we can’t stop it from repeating. They said it was a good thing that you were training. It would help you be in full control of your gifts.”
“They actually think it could happen again?” I asked.
Viktor nodded.
“But I’m already mated… It wouldn’t make sense.”
“Sometimes it doesn’t have to make sense to us,” Jake said beside me.
“Since they knew about what happened between me and Haley did they have any suggestions about training?” I asked.
“Well, as I said, they said it was good that you were training but they didn’t think it was a good idea for you to be training with the others,” Viktor said. I opened my mouth but he continued. “Before you get angry, hear me out. They said you should wait off on training with the others until you have more control over your gift. The elders said you didn’t have to have full control but it would be good if you had a good handle on the flames.”
I scoffed.
“Did they give you a checklist?” I asked sarcastically.
“Mmm… they gave us a few suggestions,” Viktor said.
Ridiculous. “Like what?” I asked.
“They suggested that when you have a good handle on your gifts it would be safer for you to train with the other pack members.”
“And when would it be safer?”
“When you can call on the fire in your palms and extinguish them on command. It would show that you exert some control over them,” Viktor said.
I nodded. The pack’s safety was a priority and always would be. “If other packs found out about my ability,” I started.
“Then it’s possible that there may be a few packs that will want your power for themselves,” Jake finished.
“I’m not only mated but I’m Luna. It would be pure greed leading them to make a move against us,” I said. I sighed and felt exhaustion start to make its way through my body. “It makes me think about Clara.”
Jake turned in his seat to look at me. “The witch?” Jake asked
“What about her?” Viktor asked.
“It makes me question whether the story we all know about the witches is true. If there are any cracks in the story we all believe. Should witches be exiled from all wolf packs or was it fear of their power that drove us against them?” I asked. Viktor sat back and I knew he was struggling with what to say.
“What are you trying to say, Kacie?” Viktor asked.
“I can’t help but think she would make for a great sparring partner,” I said. I was surprised I said the words out loud but I knew them to be true. I remember her darkness and she was so much stronger than me. If I could train with her I wouldn’t have to worry about hurting her.
“You can’t be serious,” Jake said. “Let me get this straight. You want to invite a witch to our pack lands and not just any witch by the way but one who was destined to Viktor?”
“If not her, would you feel better inviting a witch we don’t know?” I threw back at him. “I know it sounds crazy but it makes sense! I can train on my own but I would only get so far. With Clara’s help, I could get stronger faster.” I looked to Viktor who hadn’t said anything. “And Viktor already rejected her. I trust him, don’t you?” I asked. The question was pointed to both of them.
“Okay, let’s say this makes sense,” Jake started, “how will you get her to come here and help you?” Jake laughed. “Just like you said, Viktor rejected her. First, there’s the issue of finding her. When you do find her what are you going to say? ‘Oh hey, I know my mate was your destined and he rejected you but I’d like it if you come back and help train me for my own personal reasons?’ She’s going to think you’re crazy.”
“I like to think we became friends in the end,” I murmured as I slumped in my seat. Jake had a point but when I think back to when Ken had captured me; she had helped me. “It took a while but she helped me in the end. Doesn’t that count for something?” I asked. “Do you have a better idea?” I asked.
Jake let out a whoosh of breath and leaned back in his seat. “As Beta of this pack, I don’t like the idea of inviting a witch into our home. That’s not even including the fact that witches are banned from wolf territory. We’ve already done it once but you want to do it again?” Jake shook his head. “We’re playing with fire,” he said and a small smile spread across his face. I’m glad one of us could “No pun intended.”
“I’m glad you can make jokes right now,” I said and rolled my eyes.
