Chapter 12

ADAM

I carry this bag to the car with one desire: to take it to the woods, break every bone, and bury it deep, so it won't be found. But I can't do that because I'm not a fool; I understand the consequences.

So, I place it on the back seat of the car and head to the hospital, where no one will definitely ask questions.

Before my eyes is Amanda’s face: her cheek is swollen, as is her nose, from which blood is flowing. I’m proud that she managed to stand up for herself, but looking at her face, I was ready to tear that bastard apart with my bare hands.

And if seven years ago I couldn't do that for a thousand reasons, now nothing stops me. Well, almost nothing. I don’t want to break my promise to Amanda.

Seven years ago...

After that evening on the beach, our relationship changed sharply, as if the last barrier had disappeared forever. We often went for walks, kissed, she came to my fights, and afterward always tended to my wounds. Is this what happiness is?

It was like that today as well. After another victory, we sat in my locker room, and I enjoyed (consider me a pervert) Amanda cleaning a new cut on her lip.

- And a kiss? - before she could finish, I already wanted to taste her. Without any extra words, Kitten leans in and gently kisses me on the lips, causing a growl to escape from my mouth.

- Does it hurt? - the girl’s eyes show such concern that I simply melt.

- Not much. - I stretch into a smile because I always want more. I want to feel all of her, but I don’t push. I don’t know if she’s been with someone before me, so I don’t want to scare her.

- I’ll be right back from the bathroom. - she slips out of my embrace and leaves the locker room. I stand and start getting dressed, but I don’t get the hoodie on before I hear from behind:

- Aren’t you afraid to let her go alone? - that bastard again. What the hell is he doing here?

- Aren’t you afraid to provoke me like this? - he will eventually find out, and it won’t end well.

- You only know how to solve things with your fists. - Nazar sits down on a chair, showing with his whole demeanor just how indifferent he is, demonstrating how much he despises me.

- People like you don’t understand otherwise. - I put on the hoodie and lean against the table. At that moment, Kitten walks in, and in surprise, freezes in the doorway.

- Hi. - This idiot smiles at her with all thirty-two, but she quickly approaches me and only then replies.

- Hi. - She doesn’t even glance at his side, which calms me down a bit. - Shall we go?

- Of course. - And we silently walk out. We have plans, and I don’t want them to be ruined because of Nazar.

Amanda doesn’t ask anything, and I have no desire to waste our time talking about someone like him.

We arrive at the waterfront, basically as usual, because this place means too much for both of us. We sit close to the sea. It’s August, the weather is simply perfect, even though it's 3 a.m.

- My parents are going away for the weekend, do you want to come over? - The girl rests her head on my shoulder, and I freeze. I’ve wanted to ask her over a hundred times, but I never found the right moment, I feared she might misunderstand, plus a million other reasons why I haven't done it. And now I sit there, as if someone hit me on the head.

- And what will we do? - the phrase escapes before my brain processes its meaning, and once again I prove to myself that I’m an idiot. I exhale heavily, making Kitten lift her head and look at me.

- We could watch a movie, maybe I’ll make something. - There’s so much surprise in her eyes that I now have no doubt I’m an idiot. - Will you come?

- Call me, I’ll be at your place in 15 minutes. - I smile, and the tension eases off her face as she once again drops her head onto my shoulder.

We arrive... I pull out the semi-conscious Nazar and carry him to the hospital. A nurse immediately greets me and without questions leads me to the ward, and a few minutes later a doctor comes in.

- Mr. Adam, what happened? - Viktor Petrovich has helped before. This is his hospital, so no injury raises extra questions.

- Two shots. He fell, hit his head. - That’s enough for him to get on with his job. I step outside to smoke, and about 15 minutes later, the doctor appears.

- He’ll live. He’ll regain consciousness by morning. - and as much as I want him to die, I exhale with relief.

- Thank you. And Viktor Petrovich, make sure he doesn’t go anywhere until I arrive. - the doctor nods and goes back into the hospital. I finish my cigarette, get into the car, and head to Amanda.

- She definitely shouldn’t be alone right now. - I again think back to the moment she opened the door.

I don’t reach the entrance before a woman collides with me; she looks up:

- Adam… - and Amanda’s body collapses. At the last moment, I manage to catch her in my arms. Blood is flowing from her nose again.

- Damn… - I quickly turn back to the car, sit her next to me, and buckle her in. I drive fast but cautiously; I can’t afford to get into an accident.

I carry her into the ward, briefly explain all I know, and leave for the doctor to conduct an examination.

Time passes too slowly, and I start to tremble, as the worst outcomes fill my mind. If something happens to her, I will destroy him right here, and no one will be able to save that piece of shit. I can’t sit still, so I pace the hallway, nearing the point where I might just burst into the ward. But just before that happens, the doctor emerges.

- She has a concussion, but it’s not fatal. She’ll stay here until morning, and then we’ll check her condition.
