Trapped by Him

Chapter 373

Feb 22, 2026 371 / 398

Luana felt like Lois had probably misunderstood something, which was why she closed the door.

Thinking of this, she became even more uncomfortable and quickly forced herself to sit up.

Leaning against the headboard, she asked Calvert a bit awkwardly, "Could you take me home?"

But Calvert didn't respond. He frowned deeply and asked, "Do you have any other health issues besides heart disease?"

Luana's expression instantly dimmed as she felt he was doubting her. "I don't have any other diseases."

"Then why are you struggling just to sit up?" Calvert pressed.

Luana was taken aback. No matter how well she tried to hide it, she couldn't escape Calvert's notice.

"I'm just weak. I lose strength when I get tired."

"Just weak?"

His tone was full of skepticism, which made Luana feel uneasy.

She turned cold and retorted, "Do you need to hear about a terminal illness from me before you'll believe me, Mr. Coburn?"

Calvert quickly tried to explain, "That's not what I meant. I just think..."

But Luana cut him off coldly, "No matter what you meant, Mr. Coburn, I don't have to report every little thing about my health to you, do I?"

Calvert was left speechless by her words, and the anger he had been suppressing suddenly flared up again.

"Luana, can you stop talking to me like that?"

"What tone do you want me to use? Begging? Or ingratiating myself?"

Luana stared at Calvert unblinkingly.

She wanted to see if he had any conscience left.

He was the one who had damaged her artificial heart, causing her heart failure, and yet he was upset about her tone?

She was already being restrained by not retaliating—why shouldn't she be able to speak to him like this?

Calvert looked at Luana's cold expression and suddenly felt like she was a hedgehog with its quills raised.

If he got too close, she would prick him fiercely, keeping him at bay.

He said dejectedly, "I don't want you to beg or ingratiate yourself. I just want you to be okay."

Luana had been ready to have a big argument with him but didn't expect him to say that.

She stared at Calvert in surprise, and he gave her a faint smile.

His smile was gentle and pure, without any ulterior motives.

It seemed like he had genuinely been worried about her and had just asked a few too many questions.

Calvert turned around, picked up the tray from the table, and handed it to Luana. "Eat something first."

Luana didn't respond. She just stared blankly at the food.

"Miss Hammond?"

Calvert called her name, and she slowly looked up at him.

Her eyes were glistening with tears, but her expression was extremely cold.

Calvert's heart suddenly tightened at the sight.

It was as if he had done something wrong to her in the past, making him feel extremely guilty and nervous.

He was about to speak when she said, "You just said you only care if I'm okay. So why did you treat me like that five years ago?"

Luana hadn't planned to bring up the past, but his words had struck a chord.

She couldn't understand why he had tried to kill her back then but now claimed he just wanted her to be healthy.

How could someone with such conflicting intentions say something like that?

Calvert was stunned for a few seconds. A hint of guilt appeared on his face.

Five years ago, he had just lost his memory and was very unfamiliar with everything.

Luana had come to see him every day, trying to explain things, which had annoyed him.

Plus, the information he had found made him think she was manipulative.

That was why he had the guards throw her out when she was still kneeling at the door.

It was the worst thing he had ever done to her. He still felt guilty about it.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to have them throw you out. I just thought you were a bit annoying, so I..."

Calvert felt embarrassed to continue. He shouldn't do that to her.

Even if Luana had ulterior motives back then, he shouldn't have let the guards carry her out like that.

Luana had asked why he had tried to kill her.

Calvert had answered about a different incident.

He probably didn't want to admit what he had done, so he changed the subject.

Luana decided not to press further. There was no point in questioning someone who wouldn't take responsibility for their actions.

Her silence made Calvert a bit puzzled.

When she came to pick him up at the airport, he apologized, but she still didn't like him.

Now he apologized again, and she still had no reaction.

Could it be that she wasn't not referring to this?

But he had only done that one thing to hurt her, nothing else.

Calvert was confused and wanted to ask more, but Luana said coldly, "Mr. Coburn, could you please take me home? Thank you."

She didn't really have the right to ask Calvert to take her home, but her legs were immobile. She had no choice but to ask for his help.

Otherwise, she would have to stay in his villa until she could move again.

But she didn't want to be around Calvert at all.

Her coldness and distance made Calvert frown.
