POV Kiara
The scent of captured werewolves—our scouts taken three days ago—burned through my nostrils, fueling my rage as I cut through the first wave of vampire defenders.
The rescue mission was proceeding exactly as planned until I spotted three vampires fleeing toward what looked like a secondary exit. If they escaped, they'd alert reinforcements or worse.
They might relocate our captured scouts before we could reach them.
"I'm pursuing the runners," I announced in my mind-link, breaking from the main group to give chase.
"Kiara, wait for backup!" Thomen's voice crackled through my mind, but I was already moving.
I chased the fleeing vampires through a maze of corridors and storage rooms. But as I rounded a corner, I realized too late that I'd been led into a trap.
Helena stepped out of the shadows like a pale specter, her silver-laced blade already gleaming with malicious intent. The other vampires had vanished, leaving me alone with Aleron's most dangerous warrior.
"Finally," Helena purred, jealousy burning bright in her cold eyes. "I was hoping for some private time with the famous Alpha she-wolf."
"Helena," I snarled, raising my weapon. "Where are our scouts?"
"Safe. For now," she replied, circling me like a predator. "But you won't be around long enough to rescue them."
"We'll see about that."
I lunged forward, but Helena was faster than the others, her movements fluid and precise.
"He still watches you," she hissed as our blades clashed, sparks flying from the impact. "Still fucking drifts to thoughts of his precious little she-wolf. Disgusting..."
"I don't know what you're talking about!" I snapped, deflecting a strike aimed at my throat.
"Don't you?" Helena's laugh was cruel as she pressed her attack. "I know Aleron still thinks about you when he should be focused on our plans, our victory. But I'll solve that problem permanently!"
Her silver-laced blade found its mark and sliced deep across my ribs, too close to the heart. The burning agony of silver poisoning my system made me stumble, and Helena capitalized immediately.
"Not so strong now, are we?"
She struck again, this time opening a gash across my shoulder that sent blood streaming down my arm.
I fought back desperately, but the silver was weakening me faster than my regeneration could compensate. Helena's next strike sent me crashing against a concrete pillar, my weapon clattering away into the darkness.
"This is for every moment he wasted thinking about you instead of our mission," Helena snarled, raising her blade for the killing blow. "For every strategy session where his mind wandered to werewolf filth!"
The silver-laced weapon descended toward my heart with cruel satisfaction written across Helena's face. I closed my eyes, bracing for death—
A hand erupted from the shadows, crushing Helena's throat with terrifying speed. Her weapon clattered harmlessly to the ground as she was lifted off her feet like a broken doll.
"You forget yourself, Helena." Aleron's voice was cold as winter death, his pale eyes burning with fury as he held his lieutenant suspended by her neck. "You have no right to take her life."
Helena clawed at his hand, her vampire healing already working to repair the damage, but she couldn't break his grip.
"It is too early for her to die anyway," Aleron continued, his words carrying ominous implications that sent ice through my veins. "Much too early."
He released Helena, who dropped to the ground gasping and healing rapidly from her injuries. She looked between Aleron and me with something like understanding dawning in her eyes.
"My lord," she rasped, backing away from his wrath, "I was only—"
"You were overstepping," Aleron said quietly, but his voice carried absolute authority. "Leave us. Now."
Helena melted into the shadows without another word, abandoning me to face my greatest nightmare alone.
The silver poisoning crawled through my veins like liquid fire, each heartbeat weaker than the last. My vision blurred at the edges, darkness creeping in despite my desperate attempts to stay conscious.
The pillar at my back felt like the only thing keeping me upright as strength bled out of my body with every passing second.
Aleron turned toward me with predatory grace, and I watched him approach through a haze of pain and failing eyesight. Each step was deliberate, unhurried—the movement of someone who knew their prey couldn't run.
His pale green eyes never left mine, tracking every labored breath, every tremor of weakness that wracked my frame.
"Stay back!" I snarled, trying to push myself higher against the concrete.
But my arms shook with the effort and the words came out more breathless than threatening.
"Kiara." My name on his lips shifted to something almost gentle, almost concerned. "You could die."
The silver burned deeper, my heart stuttering in my chest like a broken engine. Black spots danced across my vision, and I could taste copper on my tongue.
"Like you care, bastard," I spat, though I could feel the truth of his words in my weakening heartbeat.
But Aleron moved with patient persistence, approaching despite my attempts to ward him off. When I tried to strike at him with my remaining strength, he caught my wrist easily, his touch surprisingly gentle.
"I can’t let you die like this," he said, backing me against the concrete pillar with careful movements.
Before I could ask what he meant, Aleron bit deeply into his own wrist and dark blood welling from the wound. He drew the blood into his mouth, his eyes never leaving mine as confusion and a growing alarm raced through me.
"What are you doing?" I demanded, but my voice was weak.
Instead of answering, Aleron captured my lips in a forceful kiss, using his superior strength to hold me still as he forced his blood between my lips.
I tried to resist, tried to turn away, but his grip was inexorable.
The taste of his blood hit my system like liquid fire. Powerful and intoxicating in ways that terrified me. I could feel it working immediately, healing the wounds after silver, strengthening my heartbeat, awakening something deep inside me.
Shock waves rippled through both of us, felt both foreign and frighteningly familiar. His blood sang inside me, making my skin crawl with unwanted recognition.
When he finally released me, I was completely healed but shaken to my core. The taste of his blood lingered on my lips, and something inside me craved more.
"Until next time, love," Aleron murmured, already fading back into the shadows.
"Wait!" I called out, but he was gone like smoke, leaving me alone with questions and a terrifying hunger I couldn't name.
"Kiara!" Thomen's voice echoed through the corridor as his footsteps pounded toward me. "Are you alright? I heard fighting—"
He skidded around the corner, weapon raised, only to find me standing alone against the pillar, completely unmarked by battle.
"I'm fine," I said quickly, though my voice shook. "The vampires fled when they heard you coming."
Thomen studied my face with concern, clearly sensing something was wrong through our bond.
"You were injured, I could feel it through the link. Your pain, and then... nothing."
"Superficial wounds," I lied, hating how easily the deception came. "Already healed."
But even as I spoke, I could still taste the power of Aleron's blood on my lips, feel it singing in my veins like a forbidden song.
