POV Kiara

The domestic tranquility of our shared kitchen felt like a balm after the chaos of recent battles. I tended the thick steaks on our outdoor grill while he prepared sides, the comfortable routine soothing my still-frayed nerves.

Thomen appeared behind me, his arms sliding around my waist as he pulled me back against his chest.

"You know I love watching you cook," he murmured against my ear. "There's something incredibly sexy about my mate and my glorious Alpha being domestic and deadly in equal measure."

"Flattery will get you everywhere," I laughed, leaning into his warmth. "But it won't get you dinner any faster."

"I'm in no hurry," he said, pressing a soft kiss to my neck. "I could stand here holding you all night."

The simple affection made my heart flutter, reminding me why these quiet moments mattered as much as our battles. "The steaks are almost ready. Think you can tear yourself away long enough to grab plates?"

"If I must…" Thomen sighed dramatically, releasing me with obvious reluctance.

Over dinner, we fell into easy conversation about pack business and recent events, the kind of comfortable chatter that filled our evenings. Thomen shared gossip from his patrol rounds while I updated him on training schedules.

"Marcus mentioned the Johnson family is expecting another pup," Thomen said, cutting into his steak with obvious satisfaction. "That'll be their fourth in six years."

"Good for them." I stabbed at a piece of potato, forcing myself to chew and swallow despite my body's sudden disinterest. "The pack grows stronger with each new generation."

Thomen's fork paused halfway to his mouth as he studied my face. "You're not eating."

"I am." To prove it, I took another bite, though it felt like swallowing sawdust.

"Kiara." His voice held that gentle patience he used when he knew I was deflecting. "You've been pushing food around your plate for ten minutes. What's wrong?"

‘Everything,’ I wanted to scream.

The food that should nourish me feels like nothing. I can hear conversations from three houses away. And there's this hunger inside me that grows stronger every hour, demanding something I can't name.

Instead, I forced a smile. "Just tired. It's been a really long day."

Thomen reached across the table to intertwine our fingers, "I don't know what I did to deserve you, Kiara."

His words made my heart swell with love and devotion, but also weighted it down with guilt.

How could I hide something from the person who knew me better than anyone? Yet how could I explain that I didn't understand what happened between me and Aleron that night? What is happening to me?

"Thomen…"

"I love you more than anything, you know that?" he interrupted me with a smile, that boyish grin that had captured my heart years ago.

"I love you too."

The truth of it ached in my chest. I did love him—desperately, completely. Which made hiding this growing wrongness inside me feel like betrayal.

Despite consuming a hearty meal that left my stomach satisfied—the meat and vegetables had filled the physical space—but the strange hunger inside me remained completely untouched.

As if I'd eaten nothing at all.

We launched into stories but I found myself struggling to focus. The world seemed too sharp, too bright. I could hear Mrs. Henderson's television two houses down, the rustle of leaves in her garden, and… the steady thrum of Thomen's heartbeat across the table.

His heartbeat… When has I ever been able to hear that so clearly?

We cleaned up together, moving through our familiar routine of washing and drying dishes. But even this simple domesticity felt different. My movements were too fluid, too precise. When I reached for a glass, my hand moved faster than it should have.

"Do you hear that?" I asked suddenly, a plate frozen in my soapy hands.

"Hear what?" Thomen looked up from toweling dry a serving bowl.

"My heartbeat," I said, my voice uncertain. "I can hear yours. So clearly like it's echoing in my ears."

Instead of concern, Thomen's face lit up with a warm smile. He set down the dish towel and pulled me close, stroking my hair with gentle fingers.

"Our bond is deepening," he explained, his voice tender. "I heard it happens sometimes when mates have been through intense danger together. The shared fear, the relief when we both survive… it strengthens the connection between us."

"Really?" I asked, wanting desperately to believe his rational explanation.

"Really," he confirmed, pressing a kiss to my forehead. "It means we're growing closer, more attuned to each other. It's a good thing, Kiara."

I nodded, allowing myself to be comforted by his certainty, even as the enhanced hearing continued to bombard me with information I'd never noticed before.

As night fell properly and we finished our evening routines, the unsatisfied hunger grew stronger rather than fading. It wasn't painful exactly, but it was persistent. A constant awareness that something essential was missing from my system.

When we moved to the living room, Thomen settled onto our couch with that lazy, satisfied smile that usually made me laugh. Tonight, it made my pulse race.

"Come here. You look like you need to relax."

But as I moved toward him, a different kind of hunger suddenly blazed to life inside me. The sight of him ignited an arousal that felt more intense than anything I'd experienced before.

Thomen’s broad chest rose and fell with each relaxed breath, all that lean muscle and warm skin I knew so well. His dark hair was mussed from running his fingers through it, and those warm brown eyes held that sleepy contentment that made him devastatingly attractive.

The lamplight caught the sharp line of his jaw, the curve of his mouth, the way his long legs sprawled carelessly across our couch like he owned the world.

He was gorgeous—six feet three of masculine grace. And all mine

"Kiara?" he said, clearly sensing the shift in my mood, the predatory way I was suddenly looking at him.

Without answering, I gave in to the sudden, overwhelming need and pushed him back against the couch cushions, straddling his legs with unprecedented intensity.

"Already starving for me, darling?" Thomen breathed with a low chuckle, but his hands were already rising to my hips, and I already felt him hardening beneath me.

"Shut up," I said with a smile. "I need you, now."

I crashed my mouth against his with fierce hunger, and he responded immediately. His lips parted under mine as our tongues met in a dance that sent fire racing through my veins.

Strong hands tangled in my hair, pulling me closer as I ground against him, desperate for more contact. I heard Thomen groan against my mouth when I broke away to trail kisses down his throat.

His skin tasted like salt and warmth and something uniquely him that made the strange hunger inside me roar with satisfaction.

My hands roamed across his chest, nails raking lightly over heated skin, and he arched beneath me with a low sound that went straight to my core. When I found that sensitive spot just below his collarbone and bit down gently.

His grip on my hips tightened, pressing me harder against his growing arousal.

"Fuck," he breathed, his voice rough with need. "What's gotten into you tonight?"

Instead of answering, I captured his mouth again, pouring all my desperate hunger into the kiss.

This need felt different—more primal, more consuming than usual. It was as if something wild and hungry had awakened inside me, demanding satisfaction in ways I couldn't name or understand.

But as Thomen's hands found the hem of my shirt, sliding underneath to trace patterns on my bare skin and his lips claimed mine, I pushed all questions aside.
